Drake & Other Artists Who Have Gone Platinum In 2016 So Far

Following Drake's 2X Platinum status, here are the other rappers who hit a milli this year featuring Plies, Wale and more.

The road to platinum status is filled with Hip-Hop acts this year. It's no surprise that Drake's Views is leading the pack. News of his double-platinum feat was released by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) on Tuesday (June 14), confirming his reign will not let up.

The rapper previously celebrated the presence of "One Dance" on the Hot 100 chart for the fifth week in a row, and the album at six weeks on the Billboard 200.

With the growing release of projects and singles from the game's most elite and elusive acts in the end, the demand has been met with satisfying results. J.Cole topped off the year with a platinum album plaque for his critically darling, 2014 Forest Hills Drive. Other rappers have also followed suit like Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly and Big Sean's Dark Sky Paradise.

Since the confirmation of RIAA's plan to include album streams while tracking albums, more artists have benefited in the form of platinum albums and singles. While some of the singles and albums are a few years old, it shows listeners are still buying music.

Check out the list below of new American platinum singles and albums in 2016 so far.

Meek Mill, Jay-Z Push Criminal Justice Initiative REFORM

Since Meek Mill's release from prison in April 2018, the Philadelphia native embarked on a new journey to help those unjustly trapped by the criminal justice system while fighting his own personal case.

On Wednesday (Jan. 23), the MMG rapper, Jay-Z, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, social activist Van Jones, Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin and more announced the launch of REFORM, an organization that aims to tackle the criminal justice system's perils by implementing effective strategies to revamp its current state. Jones will also serve as CEO.

Part of the organization will highlight the establishment of a fair parole/probation system, a mandate that has followed Meek Mill since his late teens. Recently, the "Trauma" artist expressed his desire to end his parole, which he's been under state supervision for over a decade.

I just wanna get off probation I been on this shit my whole adult life ... 11 years of asking for permission 🤯

On the subject of Mill's case, Jay-Z penned an op-ed for the New York Times where he highlights the country's crippling parole system. "The specifics of Meek's case inspired me to write this. But it's time we highlight the random ways people trapped in the criminal justice system are punished every day," he wrote in late 2017. "The system treats them as a danger to society, consistently monitors and follows them for any minor infraction — with the goal of putting them back in prison."
