Serena Williams Is The World's Highest Paid Female Athlete
The Grand Dame of the Grand Slam continues to make power moves on and off the court.
Despite a heart-wrenching lost at the French Open on Saturday (June 4), Serena Williams has all the more reason to celebrate. According to Forbes, tennis' perennial champion-in-motion overtook on-court rival Maria Sharapova to become the world's highest paid female athlete. The tennis all-star racked up a reported $28.9 million in the past year. With career prize money of more than $77 million, it's clearly evident that Serena Williams is not strapped for cash.
The 34-year old athlete, one-half of tennis' dynamic duo, has earned more than double the amount as her female contemporaries, in large part due to her mass-market appeal and late-career dominance within the past year. A twerk-heavy cameo in Beyonce's Lemonade visual also doesn't hurt her cause for global dominance.
Giving credence to the saying "Always stay gracious, best revenge is your paper," Williams is also gracing the cover for the July issue of Glamour magazine.
