Baton Rouge has become a microcosm for the nation's tension since the horrific killing of Alton Sterling July 5. Since then, protests and demonstrations have erupted with many demanding for police reform and accountability as Sterling, and Minneapolis' Philando Castile become the latest victims adding of African-American men and women killed by police.
Coppola said the shooting happened near the B Quick store on Airline Highway and maintains the scene has since been contained. "I do not have the extent of the injuries," Coppola told WAFB. "We're hearing that it may also include some deputies [with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office], but that's preliminary information and I'm waiting on confirmation."
The news of the fallen Baton Rouge officers comes on the heels of three young people who attempted to plot and kill officers from guns stolen from a pawn shop.
