Don Lemon Says He Has To "Yes Sir" Police So He's Not Shot
In a turn of events, the TV personality speaks up about police brutality.
It's mixed reviews on Twitter and the rest of the Internet due to recent comments made by CNN's Don Lemon Thursday. (July 7)
During a panel discussion with Hot 97's Peter Rosenberg and Global Security Group CEO David Katz, Lemon--who usually takes the opposite side of the Black majority--sided with the general opinion as he admitted to being extra polite when speaking to cops simply to avoid being shot.
" 'Officer, why are you stopping me? Yes. Yes, officer' or whatever. I shouldn't have to do that. I shouldn't have to be 'Yes, sir'-ing anybody, right? I'm a grown, you-know-what man. But I do it because I want to stay alive. That's why I do it. I shouldn't have to." Lemon said to Katz.
As Katz continued to interrupt Lemon to assert he teaches his children the same, Don raised his voice out of frustration and to complete his statement.
"Let me finish! Let me finish!" Lemon said passionately. "As accomplished as I am and a man of color on television who is recognizable to many people, I have to do that because I don't want to be shot, and I don't want to be killed." Lemon said.
Lemon also spoke on mainstream media's tendency to dig up the criminal records of those slain, while white children who too commit crimes, are often painted in a more wholesome light. While Twitter has been rightfully solemn in light of recent events today, spirits have picked up a little and the reactions have been hilarious.
