A 29-Year-Old Mother In Memphis Is Charged With Fatally Stabbing Her 4 Children
One child was able to escape the brutal murders.
A 29-year-old mother is accused of brutally murdering her four children in Memphis on Friday (July 1). Shaynthia Gardner was arrested on first degree murder charges for fatally stabbing the children, the youngest of which was 6 months old.
Gardner’s 4-year-old son, and three daughters ages 3, 2, and 6 months, were found dead at the Irene apartments in Shelby County. Neighbors say the family had recently moved into the complex.
Another of Gardner children, a 7-year-old-boy, was able to escape unharmed. "He is safe and in a place of protection until next-of-kin can be notified," said Shelby County Sheriff Bill Oldham said Saturday.
The father of the four victims was questioned by police though he was not at the apartment at the time of the murders. According to authorities, Gardner told him that she killed the children and had superficial cuts to her wrists and neck.
The surviving child has a different father, whom Gardner has reportedly known since junior high school. Gardner’s motive is unknown, but the paternal grandmother of the boy expressed forgiveness in light of the horrific tragedy.
“I know this was not her,” said Sonja Clayton. “I know this was the work of the devil. I love Shanynthia wholeheartedly still.”
Gardner faces several charges including four counts of first-degree murder, felony aggravated child abuse, and aggravated child endangerment.
