V Bozeman’s New Song “Dear Officer” Is A Sorrowful Plea For Peace

After the recent tragedies involving police brutality, there has been an outpouring of music from artists of all genres expressing their frustrations and searching for understanding through song. Solange Knowles posted a soulful cover of Syreeta’s “Black Maybe” on Instagram. Swizz Beatz and Scarface dropped some bars asking for prayer for families afflicted by police brutality in “Sad News.” And yesterday (July 11), Empire star V Bozeman released a song titled “Dear Officer,” which features Young Lyfe and questions the safety of husbands, brothers and sons of color.

Squad car sirens and the sobs of a crying woman are layered into the beat of this soulful tear-jerker. Sound bites from a Malcolm X speech on police brutality interject here and there to draw parallels between the events of today and decades ago. Bozeman croons through the chorus, asking, “Why does that blue blood run so thick?”
