As Vic Mensa continues shutting down stages around the country for his "Back With A Vengence" tour, he hasn't forgotten about his debut album, Traffic.
In a recent interview with AllHipHop, the rapper and budding activist opened up about the trouble in his heart that is police brutality and how today's racial tensions and presidential election affected the creation of the album. "The music I’m performing is different than the music I performed last year," he said. "It’s a lot more topical. I’m just excited to get out there and really spit that s***t they need to hear." Since his debut on Roc Nation, the rapper has welcomed both commercial and critical acclaim. The former being the Kanye West-assisted single, "U Mad" and the latter, his recent EP There's A lot Going On.
Tracks like "Shades of Blue" and "16 Shots" paint more than just a conscious soul. Speaking from a first-hand account, the rapper speaks on the harsh realities of crime in Chicago, as well as the police shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. While making music with a message, the rapper says he didn't feel connected to his debut album, known as Traffic. "I made an album and then I didn’t feel like it was the right representation," he said. "So I started making a new album. That’s where the songs from There’s Alot Going On came out of. I would say it’s about 75% done."
This week, the rapper continued his aforementioned tour and shut the stage down at New York's Brooklyn Bowl with Joey Purp Monday (July 25) evening.
After taking the Lollapalooza stage this weekend, Vic will wrap up his tour August 5 in San Francisco. Score your tickets here.
