Biopic About Olympic Boxer Claressa Shields Is In The Works At Universal Studios
The Olympic medalist is getting her due on the big screen.
When it comes to death defying acrobatics, history making athletics and an onslaught of gold medal glory, the USA delivered a stellar showing at the 2106 Olympics, and Claressa Shields is no exception. Defending her win from the 2012 London Olympics title in the women's middleweight division, Shields defeated Nouchka Fontijn to become the first American boxer to win two Olympic gold medals. Not one to scrimp a success story of tales of true grit, Hollywood has taken notice of Shields' rise to Olympic glory.
According to Shadow and Act, a biopic about Claressa Shields is in the works at Universal Studios. Word broke in early March that Universal acquired the rights to the life story of the Michigan native. With tentpole films such as Creed, Raging Bull, and Rocky, the American boxing film has remained a very male-centric entity within the American film market. In the event a Claressa Shields biopic comes to fruition, it would join the Hilary Swank-led film Million Dollar Baby as one of the few boxing films to showcase a female protagonist.
