Frank Ocean Predicts His Own Death: "Murder Me Like Selena"
Oh, the pressures and consequences of celebrity culture…
After waiting four gruesomely long years, Frank Ocean fans rejoiced in two new projects from the reclusive singer. He officially released his second studio album, Blonde, on Saturday (Aug. 20). The 17-track album, originally rumored to be titled Boys Don’t Cry, dropped exclusively on Apple Music, and features the likes of Kanye West, Beyoncé and Andre 3000, among others.
“Futura Free,” an eerie stream of consciousness divided into two sections, finds Ocean reflecting on the trajectory of his life and his many accomplishments. On the former half, as Genius points out, the now-independent artist rambles about several topics including religion and sexuality, and references the tragic deaths of music icons Tupac Shakur and Selena, both of whom met their demise at a young age.
Queen of Tejano, Selena Quintanilla, was killed by Yolanda Saldívar, who once ran a Selena fan club and served as manager of Selena’s boutiques. "I feel like Selena/ They wanna murder a nigga/ Murder me like Selena," sings Ocean, who, by alluding to a tragic death, suggests the very pressures and consequences that come with superstardom will eventually cause his own death. He even hints at the Grim Reaper's impending shadow when he sings previously, “Please gimme immortality/ I’m going rapidly/ Fading drastically."
March of this year marked 21 years since the Mexican-American legend dearly departed. The late singer garnered headlines after receiving her own lipstick line in MAC cosmetics, and an honorary star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Madame Tussauds Hollywood will also be honoring Selena & Co. with a coveted wax figure.
