Premiere: ‘The Get Down’ Debuts Hip-Hop Inspired Posters

VIBE is proud to unveil a set of custom character posters for the upcoming Netflix series The Get Down. Inspired by Buddy Esquire’s work, these hip-hop influenced individual portraits of characters Shaolin Fantastic, Ezekiel “Books” Figuero, Mylene Cruz, Dizzee Kipling and “Cadillac” deliver a classic feel.

From Baz Luhrmann and a team of collaborators including four-time Oscar® winner and fellow executive producer Catherine Martin, legendary MC and executive producer Nas, associate producer Grandmaster Flash, Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, co-creator and executive producer Stephen Adly Guirgis; and expert collaborators, including hip-hop historian and supervising producer Nelson George, The Get Down is a mythic saga of how New York at the brink of bankruptcy gave birth to a new art form in the late 70s.

Grandmaster Flash also gives us a quick behind the scenes look into the film. In a minute long featurette, Flash breaks down the process of teaching actors Mamadou Athie and Shamiek Moore how to spiun. “I feel like I’m playing a little part of Hip-Hop history now,” says Athie when he described how it felt to play the lead role of Flash.

Part One of The Get Down, comprising six episodes, will premiere on Friday, August 12th exclusively on Netflix around the world.
