Ride The Wave During The 4th Annual Women’s Surf Film Festival This Weekend

The summer brings everyone a sense of thrill and adventure, but for these women, the feeling is all year round with their careers in surfing. Their stories have been told through a series of films and art installations at the fourth annual Women’s Surf Film Festival. Presented by LUNA and Lava Girl Surf, the event takes place Aug. 12 and 13 at New York’s popular Rockaway Beach.

When you think of New York sports, surfing rarely comes to mind. The event founded by Davina Grincevicius hopes to share the city’s growing surf scene, while telling the stories of women who battle sexism in and out of the water. “The level of excitement surrounding this year’s Women’s Surf Film Festival is greater than ever,” Grincevicius says in a statement. “We have such great filmmakers, artists and surfers coming from around the world to celebrate, inspire and connect with the women’s surf community. The films are curated from around the world and the surfer’s featured represent such a beautifully diverse mix of cultures, styles and influences.”

This year the film festival is enhanced by a fantastic photography exhibition by Australian surf photographer Fran Miller. Fran is a regular contributor for WSL, The Inertia and Sunshine Surf Girls…and last but not least, a surfer. “We are thrilled to combine her art exhibition with the film festival and introduce her work to the NYC surf scene,” Grincevicius said.

On Friday, the reception opens with Miller’s photo exhibit titled, “Prima Donna.” A few short films will also be shown. On Saturday, the documentaries Women and the Waves 2 and It Ain’t Pretty  will premiere. The latter will focus on introducing young girls to the surfing world.
