Dominican Pageant Queen Dons Blackface To Imitate Another Famous Dominican
Don’t you just love when racism/colorism is perpetuated within our communities? TV host and former pageant queen, Geisha Montes de Oca, graced the stage of her show Aquí Se Habla Español donning blackface, an afro wig, and butt pads while attempting to imitate Dominican artist, Amara La Negra.
As Black Girl Long Hair points out, many viewers took to the show’s Instagram account to express their outrage. “This is disgusting,” said one commenter. “She is making a mockery of her own African descent … so sad. Love the DR, but the people are so stuck with the slave mentality. They see nothing wrong with it.”
While La Negra hasn’t straightforwardly commented on Montes de Oca’s recent stunt (we reached out for a personal quote), she did share the video and pictures of the spectacle on her personal IG account, perhaps to create fodder for conversation.
We introduced Amara La Negra back in May 2015, during which she emphatically talked at length with us about what it’s like to move in this world and the entertainment industry as an Afro-Latina woman. Get acquainted.
