The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul released her first single from her upcoming album Strength of a Woman Thursday (Oct. 6). Written by fellow R&B songbird Jazmine Sullivan, the powerhouse ballad is all about finding your center when love goes awry. The idea is relatable and painfully Mary’s current plight. In July, the singer confirmed her separation from her husband and business manager of 12 years, Kendu Issacs.

The singer isn’t letting love get her down. Instead, she reassures herself the best is yet to come. “What a hell of a year If I make it through hell and I come out alive I got nothing to fear,” she sings while breaking out the vocals we attempt to pull off in the shower.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the singer says she’s aware that fans are selfishly expecting her to sing about her life. “Being Mary J. Blige is real,” she said. “It’s traumatic, and it’s beautiful. Because my life, I actually have to live out what I’m singing.”
