Yasiin Bey: “I’m Retiring For Real This Year”
Yasiin Bey reiterated his plan to retire in a Facebook live post Friday (Oct. 14). The 44-year-old MC was billed to perform at London’s O2 Forum Friday, but wasn’t allowed in the country due to a passport issue in South Africa where has lived for the last three years.
According to the Fader, Bey explained why he won’t be performing in Europe for the time being (the London show is postponed until Oct. 22), and acknowledged the 17th anniversary release of his 1999 debut, Black on Both Sides.
“I’m retiring for real this year,” Bey explained in the video. “I’m grateful to have had the career that I’ve been able to enjoy. As I say to many people… my brother and sisters, thank you for spending your money and more importantly your time.”
The Brooklyn native also teased a final show to be live streamed from Cape Town, and offered up some “exclusive new material” to Jay Z’s TIDAL platform.
Before he officially retires, Bey has as many as two film “commitments” to fulfill. “Apart form that I’m moving onto other things, still being creative,” he said. “Definitely fashion, textiles and just art. Whatever I can create that’s beautiful and useful, that’s what I wanna’ do.”
The Facebook Live video was later deleted.
