‘Insecure’ Set To Return To HBO For Second Season
Get ready to plan your Insecure watch parties in advance. HBO recently announced that their hit show will return for a second season. Straight from Issa Rae’s clever mind, the half-hour program became an instant fan favorite since its debut in October.
In a conversation with NPR, Rae dived into how her sense of humor came to be, giving a nod to shows like 30 Rock and Seinfeld. “There seems to be, like, ‘black humor’ and there seems to be ‘white humor.’ And a lot of my friends’ tastes — we like both, but we don’t get to see ourselves reflected on the ‘white humor’ side,” Rae said. “I wanted to take these traits in the same way that a lot of my favorite comedians have done, Ellen [DeGeneres] included. Ellen takes so many relatable, embarrassing moments and amplifies them. And … [I wanted to] have a black character go through those things and make it very racially specific, but universal at the same time.”
In an early interview with VIBE, actor Jay Ellis, who plays Issa’s love interest named Lawrence, spoke on the type of impact he hopes the show has on viewers, particularly black women. “There’s something for everyone. Issa’s done such an amazing job of speaking her truth and her truth spoke to so many other black women in this country,” he said. “And she brought the exact same voice to this show.”
Insecure airs on Sundays at 10:30 p.m. EST.
