Mexican Man Commits Suicide After Third U.S. Deportation

Guadalupe Olivas Valencia’s latest attempt to cross the U.S. border was his last.

On Tuesday (Feb. 21), the 45-year-old man was deported for a third time after border officials spotted and detained him, BBC reports. Less than an hour later, witnesses saw Olivas Valencia jump off a bridge yards away from border crossing point El Chaparral.

The Sinaloa native reportedly died of a heart attack and concussion after he was taken to the hospital shortly after. His home state is among Mexico’s most violent, which served as infamous drug kingpin El Chapo’s hideout prior to his arrest in January 2016.

Olivas Valencia’s death comes amid Donald Trump’s crackdown on immigration. According to the Associated Press, the administration has proposed to round up unauthorized immigrants with the help of an estimated 100,000 National Guard troops.
