North Carolina Teen Decapitates Mother Because He “Felt Like It”
A next door neighbor in Franklin County, North Carolina told a local news outlet she saw an “object” laying in the ground. That object law enforcement officials would later determine was the decapitated head of 35-year-old Yesenia Funez Beatriz Machada, and her gruesome death was caused by her son.
During a 911 call Monday (March 6), 18-year-old Oliver Maurico Funes Machada told the operator he committed the crime because “he felt like it.” He has since been charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond and undergoing a mental health evaluation at Central Prison. According to reports, the mental health of the EMS personnel who arrived at the horrific scene is also being tended to.
At a preliminary hearing Tuesday, both the defense and prosecution say mental health will play a huge role in how the case plays out. Per court documents, Machada took four different medications for psychosis and schizophrenia and admitted to stabbing his mother half a dozen times. Yesenia had four kids in total, one child was at school and two other siblings were in the house when the murder happened. Thankfully no one else was hurt. Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Chief of Staff Terry Wright said Machada called 911 himself after the crime.
“Officers encountered the suspect holding a knife and, as reported, also holding his mother’s head in the other arm,” Wright said. “It’s tough for the deputies. It’s tough for the communities. We will be offering any of them assistance who just may need it because it was a horrific scene that first responders had to respond to.”
As it stands now, investigators have no motive as to what caused the crime.
