T.I. Dubs Himself The Creator Of Trap Music, Sees Marriage As A Distraction

His explanation makes a lot of sense though.

When the sub-genre of trap music becomes a topic of discussion, names like Gucci Mane, Future or Waka Flocka Flame often get thrown in the mix. But if you ask T.I., his name should definitely be at the top of the list. In a recent radio interview with Angie Martinez on Monday (April 10), Tip made some bold statements, claiming to be the creator of the infectious genre, HotNewHipHop reports.

"A lot of people they don't really [...] know that I created trap music," he told the Voice of New York. "There was no such thing as trap prior to... no such thing, it didn't exist." During the 30-minute interview, the Us or Else artist claimed to have started the genre when he released his second studio album, Trap Muzik back in 2003. Prior to that, melodies often fell into the category of "crunk."

"Because of the first album I did, people who heard it didn't know where I was from," he continued. "'Is he from Atlanta? He raps too good. Is he from New York? Where is he from.' So, Trap Muzik was establishing a sound—like, this is who I am."

While we can all agree that trap music is native to Southern artists, it is hard to say T.I. is the sole originator of the genre. To many, he might share the crown with Guwop, Tity Boi (now known as 2 Chainz) and Three Six Mafia.

Around the seven-minute mark, T.I. also shared his honest thoughts on why marriage is a thing of the past. "Marriage is going to distract me and deter me from taking my family onward and upward," he said. "...I don't always have time to do the thoughtful things a husband does."

2020 BET Hip Hop Awards: Watch Performances From City Girls, Big Sean, 2 Chainz And More

City Girls, Big Sean, Jhené Aiko, Brandy, 2 Chainz, and more made the 2020 BET Hip-Hop Awards a night to remember. Hosted by DC Young Fly, Karlous Miller and Chico Bean of 85 South, the socially-distanced event went down on Tuesday (Oct. 27).

Doubling as a sounding board for socially conscious commentary and voting engagement, the show featured several references to Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and other victims of police brutality. The night included a statement from vice presidential hopeful and Howard University alum, Kamala Harris, in celebration of HBCU’s.

Although there were more performances than awards given out during the ceremony, the show was full of surprises. Master P received the I Am Hip Hop Award presented to him by former No Limit artist, Snoop Dogg. Rapsody won her first award ever for Best Hip-Hop Lyricist, Pop Smoke was posthumously awarded the Best New Artist trophy, and Lil Baby accepted the Impact Track honor for, “The Bigger Picture.”

YBN Cordae paid homage to Juice Wrld, and Quavo performed a tribute medley to Pop Smoke. The award show also honored other late rappers, including Fred Da Godson.

Ty Dolla $ign Releases New Album Feat. Nicki Minaj, Roddy Ricch, Kanye West And More

After a three-year album hiatus, Ty Dolla $ign released his latest studio effort, Featuring Ty Dolla $ign, on Friday (Oct. 23).

The 25-track album features appearances from Nicki Minaj, Kid Cudi, FKA Twigs, Roddy Ricch, Jhené Aiko, Kehlani, 6lack, Young Thug, Music Soulchild, Skrillex, Quavo, Anderson Paak, Post Malone, Kanye West, and more.

Powered by previously released singles, “Ego Death,” Expensive” and By Yourself,” the new album flexes a different music muscle for the Grammy-nominated recording artists who steered clear of  making club records.

“I was intentionally trying to not make club songs [talking about] hoes and *itches and all the sh*t I used to talk about,” Ty told Vulture in a recent interview. “I was trying to, like, talk about my life, and what it is now, and really do something different with it. I got a daughter going to high school this year, and she’s paying attention, and all her friends are paying attention, so I can’t talk as crazy or do the crazy sh*t that I used to do.”

Kehlani Plays Bryson Tiller’s Love Interest In “Always Forever” Video

Kehlani stars as Tiller’s love interest in the intimate new music video for “Always Forever,” released on Thursday (Oct. 22).

The stunning visual, directed by Glenn Michael of Toronto’s Kid Studio, is a creative take on how a relationship can become your entire universe. Tyler and Kehlani cuddle up, kiss, and hold hand in the steamy visual, prompting some fans to question the chemistry between the two. They might look pretty cozy, but Kehlani and Tiller are just friends (Tiller welcomed a child with girlfriend Kendra Bailey last year).

Kehlani shared some close-up stills from the music video on Instagram along with a message thanking Tiller for being a “solid” friend. “To one of my dearest friends…matching tattoos, years worth of stories, nights of dying laughter and holding each other down in the roughest times…I’m so proud of you. Thank you for being solid.”

The post was deleted after fans in the comments continued to speculate if the two were an item. Kehlani shared a follow-up message on her Instagram Story explaining in part, “I post lengthy captions about all my friends. You would have to follow me to know that.”
