J. Cole Admits Depression At The Height Of His Career In 'Vulture' Interview

"I realized I was putting too much importance on what other people thought about me."

J. Cole might sound like the self-enlightened rapper preaching to the younger rap generation on his new album K.O.D., but only because he’s been in their shoes. In a rare interview with Vulture, Cole admits he felt depressed while working on 2014 Forest Hills Drive.

The “ATM” rapper told Vulture’s Paul Cantor after the release of his first two albums Cole World: The Sideline Story and Born Sinner, he compromised who he really wanted to be as an artist to get mainstream approval. It wasn’t until he cleared his mind through meditation that he realized the common thread weaving his unhappiness.

“I didn’t like how I felt about my life. I’d been depressed for like three years," he said. "And I realized I was putting too much importance on what other people thought about me."

Cole’s “Once an Addict (Interlude)” speaks on the personal story of watching his mother wrestle with the intense arms of drugs and alcohol after his stepfather left. He never fully uncovered the damage it did to his psyche if it imposed any damage at all.

“My mom going through her s**t had a traumatic impact on me, and I never had a chance to process that s**t. I just put my head down,” he revealed. “I wasn’t having an honest conversation with myself.”

K.O.D.’s success is soon to match and even surpass 2014 Forest Hills Drive and 4 Your Eyez Only as it received 36.7 million Spotify streams and 64.5 million streams on Apple Music in the first 24 hours. Now, Cole says he accepts who he is and doesn’t think twice about what a hater has to say.

2020 BET Hip Hop Awards: Watch Performances From City Girls, Big Sean, 2 Chainz And More

City Girls, Big Sean, Jhené Aiko, Brandy, 2 Chainz, and more made the 2020 BET Hip-Hop Awards a night to remember. Hosted by DC Young Fly, Karlous Miller and Chico Bean of 85 South, the socially-distanced event went down on Tuesday (Oct. 27).

Doubling as a sounding board for socially conscious commentary and voting engagement, the show featured several references to Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and other victims of police brutality. The night included a statement from vice presidential hopeful and Howard University alum, Kamala Harris, in celebration of HBCU’s.

Although there were more performances than awards given out during the ceremony, the show was full of surprises. Master P received the I Am Hip Hop Award presented to him by former No Limit artist, Snoop Dogg. Rapsody won her first award ever for Best Hip-Hop Lyricist, Pop Smoke was posthumously awarded the Best New Artist trophy, and Lil Baby accepted the Impact Track honor for, “The Bigger Picture.”

YBN Cordae paid homage to Juice Wrld, and Quavo performed a tribute medley to Pop Smoke. The award show also honored other late rappers, including Fred Da Godson.

Ty Dolla $ign Releases New Album Feat. Nicki Minaj, Roddy Ricch, Kanye West And More

After a three-year album hiatus, Ty Dolla $ign released his latest studio effort, Featuring Ty Dolla $ign, on Friday (Oct. 23).

The 25-track album features appearances from Nicki Minaj, Kid Cudi, FKA Twigs, Roddy Ricch, Jhené Aiko, Kehlani, 6lack, Young Thug, Music Soulchild, Skrillex, Quavo, Anderson Paak, Post Malone, Kanye West, and more.

Powered by previously released singles, “Ego Death,” Expensive” and By Yourself,” the new album flexes a different music muscle for the Grammy-nominated recording artists who steered clear of  making club records.

“I was intentionally trying to not make club songs [talking about] hoes and *itches and all the sh*t I used to talk about,” Ty told Vulture in a recent interview. “I was trying to, like, talk about my life, and what it is now, and really do something different with it. I got a daughter going to high school this year, and she’s paying attention, and all her friends are paying attention, so I can’t talk as crazy or do the crazy sh*t that I used to do.”

Kehlani Plays Bryson Tiller’s Love Interest In “Always Forever” Video

Kehlani stars as Tiller’s love interest in the intimate new music video for “Always Forever,” released on Thursday (Oct. 22).

The stunning visual, directed by Glenn Michael of Toronto’s Kid Studio, is a creative take on how a relationship can become your entire universe. Tyler and Kehlani cuddle up, kiss, and hold hand in the steamy visual, prompting some fans to question the chemistry between the two. They might look pretty cozy, but Kehlani and Tiller are just friends (Tiller welcomed a child with girlfriend Kendra Bailey last year).

Thank you for being solid.”

The post was deleted after fans in the comments continued to speculate if the two were an item. Kehlani shared a follow-up message on her Instagram Story explaining in part, “I post lengthy captions about all my friends. You would have to follow me to know that.”
