First Openly Trans Spelman Graduate Hopes His Story Will Inspire Others

"For someone following in my footsteps, I would tell them to be brave," Neal said after his photo went viral.

Spelman College wants to change history as they formally announced in 2017 transgender students would be accepted to the historically black college. This graduation season, a student by the name of Keo O'Neal made history as he became the first openly trans man to graduate from the school.

On May 13, O'Neal posted his graduation picture to his  Twitter with the caption, "first 'openly' trans man to graduate from Spelman College". The photo has since gone viral racking up over 5,000 retweets and 31,000 likes and counting.

"I love that Spelman is progressing and opening its doors to trans women but to me, it’s a bit reactionary," said O'Neal to Blavity Tuesday (May 15). He explained how they weren't quite prepared with programs and education for his community.

"Spelman isn’t ready for such a great change to happen. Spelman should have agreed to the policy but put it off for another five years to really plan and decide what was to happen on campus to ensure the comfort and safety of trans and queer students. Spelman doesn’t know how to handle the issues we are currently having with queer students; I’m not sure what will or if anything will change when trans women start attending."

The 21-year-old first enrolled at the school in 2014 and briefly transferred to a PWI for his sophomore year. After returning to Spelman, he continued as a history major for a few reasons. “I came back to Spelman my junior year because although I could flourish in my queerness, I felt like I was denying my blackness and I was nothing more than a body to those folks,” O’Neal said to HuffPost.

In the future, O'Neal hopes his graduation photo will act as inspiration for fellow people in his same position. "For someone following in my footsteps, I would tell them to be brave," said O'Neal. "Transitioning was one brave step now living in that truth takes even more bravery. It’s not going to be easy but it will be worth it, just drown out the background noise."

With all of the viral attention, O'Neal is hoping the universe will align his life with a job, but he plans to take some time off first before obtaining his Ph.D this fall. “Right now, I’m on the job hunt! Not necessarily looking to stay in my major but I definitely want to do something I love,” he said.

He also wants to take some time to work with LGBTQIA+ nonprofits. The decision to work with nonprofits may stem from O'Neal admitting to feeling invisible at times. "Before I transitioned and before I 'passed,' it was hard to assert myself and tell people my pronouns or explain that I’m trans. It’s hard to exist in a space where you feel invisible," said O'Neal.

Back in May, reports surfaced about homophobic and transphobic notes passed around campus."I was never targeted by the homophobic and transphobic notes," O'Neal said. "I thought I would be after the first one surfaced, but nothing was ever directed towards me. I was shocked that it had even happened."

In the end, O'Neal is happy for the tribe that supported him at Spelman. “I could not have made it this far without the encouragement of others,” he said. “It truly takes a village. For everyone who played a part in my successes, this is a win for all of us.”

FX's ‘Pose’ Unveils Gripping Season 2 Trailer

Next month, Pose fans’ patience will be alleviated with season two’s premiere. To get viewers ready, FX debuted its 45-second trailer on Thursday (May 23), packed with an array of moving storylines.

Set in New York City’s ‘90s period, the characters will explore life-altering changes in their careers and health. For Blanca, the status of her HIV-positive diagnosis will take precedence as the House of Evangelista begins to navigate a newfound arena of prominence in the ballroom scene.

In an interview with Billboard, producer and activist Janet Mock dished on what to expect for the upcoming season. "There's a rule in the writers room that we do not talk about what we're going to do, but I think that it's really going deeper every episode,” Mock said. “As viewers kind of notice, we tend to focus in on a character that we may not have known as much before, right? For example, this week will really be central around Lil Papi’s character, his relationship with Blanca and things [that] have been alluded about throughout the season. There will be some of the origins stories of characters that we may not have heard as much from before, but whom people of course love because they are either on Team Abundance or Team Evangelista.”

Ahead of its June 11 return on FX (10 p.m. EST), view the trailer above.

Kanye West Tells David Letterman That Liberals Are Bullying Donald Trump Supporters

Ahead of David Letterman’s My Next Guest Needs No Introduction return to Netflix (May 31), details about the veteran interviewer’s upcoming conversation with Kanye West has hit the Internet. According to The Daily Beast, the pair discuss mental health, Drake fallout, and his views on Donald Trump.

In 2018, West used various platforms from TMZ to his personal Twitter account to express his controversial and political standing as it relates to his support of Trump. While he caught flack for it, West told Letterman that everyone should have the right to stand tall in their beliefs.

“This is like my thing with Trump—we don’t have to feel the same way, but we have the right to feel what we feel,” he said. The father-of-four also admitted that he’s “never voted in my life,” and that those who cast a ballot for Trump were “treated like enemies of America because that’s what they felt.” He added that “Liberals bully people who are Trump supporters!”

The Daily Beast also reported on West’s address of mental health. Here, he pinpointed how the masses interpreted his statements, inadvertently referring to his viral interview on TMZ. “When you’re bipolar, you have the potential to ramp up and it can take you to a point where you start acting erratic, as TMZ would put it,” he said. West continued to unpack his views on mental health, saying, “If you guys want these crazy ideas and these crazy stages and this crazy music and this crazy way of thinking, there’s a chance it might come from a crazy person."

In an interview with Willie Geist of “Sunday Today,” Letterman said he didn’t know what to expect ahead of his sit-down with the Ye rapper. “I was frightened honestly because I had only met him a couple of times on the show, and I knew that depending on the day, you weren’t quite sure which path you were going to be on,” he said.

Solange Announces Performance Piece 'Witness!' Will Premiere In September

Solange is the composer and director of a special performance piece titled "Witness!" The piece will be performed on September 17 at Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Germany.

"So excited to announce “Witness!” a special performance piece composed and directed by myself at the phenomenal @elbphilharmonie (photo’d here:)," she wrote on Instagram to accompany a photo of the event flyer, which features the picturesque venue. Tickets for the performance go on sale on May 31.

The Houston native is no stranger to elaborate stage productions and intricate, detail-driven performances. She's performed in places such as the Guggenheim and Marfa's Chinati Foundation, so we're sure "Witness!" will be one to remember.

Earlier this year, Solange dropped her performance slot at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival, citing "major production delays" as the cause for cancellation. "She sends her sincerest apologies, and looks forward to performing at Coachella in the future," the official Coachella Twitter page read.

The performance coincides with the release of her latest studio-album, When I Get Home. Check out her announcement below.
