Initially, Balvin was scheduled to perform in November 2017, but due to the untimely death of Fallon’s mother, the scheduled appearance was canceled. This time around, the “Mi Gente” rapper is going to perform a special medley with fellow Latin star, Nicky Jam.
The Colombian artist took to Instagram to share the great news. “Más movimientos para la cultura urbana !!,” he writes. “Junto a mi hermano @nickyjampr en @jimmyfallon PRÓXIMA SEMANA AGOSTO 1.”
It’s great to see a bevy of Latin artists steadily infiltrating the mainstream market based on the strength of their own talent, without having to compromise their Latin culture and sound. This is exactly what Balvin has wanted since the inception of his career.
“Let’s take Spanish music the farthest that we can so that everything will be more natural and organic. I don’t want something like ‘Now he is popular in the Latin market, so now he wants to sing in English,’” he told VIBE VIVA in his 2016 cover story.
“My dream is to have Justin Bieber sing with me in Spanish, then have Drake and Rihanna sing with me in Spanish as well. I want to invite them into our world, and get the importance that we deserve just like they get the importance that they deserve.”
