A couple on their way to the hospital for a scheduled C-Section stopped at a local gas station. It was then Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents detained Joel Arrona-Lara. According to reports, Arrona-Lara was placed in custody leaving his pregnant wife to drive herself to the hospital and deliver their baby alone.
Arrona-Lara was taken due to an alleged outstanding homicide warrant in Mexico. However, his lawyer said those charges are unconfirmed. Arrona-Lara’s attorney, who works on behalf of the nonprofit San Bernardino Community Service Center, also contacted the Mexican consulate, which didn’t corroborate the allegation.
“My husband needs to be here,” Maria del Carmen Venegas said. “He had to wait for his son for so long, and someone just took him away.”
Arrona-Lara’s detention paperwork details he’s being held in custody for being in the country without documentation. In a statement from ICE, they make no mention of Arrona-Lara’s alleged murder warrant.
“Mr. Arrona-Lara, a citizen of Mexico illegally residing in the United States, was taken into custody Wednesday by ICE Fugitive Operations Team officers in San Bernardino, Calif. Mr. Arrona-Lara is currently in ICE custody pending removal proceedings with the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR).
