Kevin Hart’s Charity Announces $600,000 Scholarship Fund
When LeBron James announced the opening of his I Promise public school, his new venture inspired others to pay it forward in their communities. One entertainer who was bitten by the motivation bug was Kevin Hart. The multi-million dollar comedian recently unveiled that his charity has established a $600,000 scholarship fund for college students.
“Education and knowledge are powerful. I just wanted to do my part in providing opportunities for our future leaders, especially from my Philly hometown and show support for HBCUs,” Hart said in a statement on the Help From The Hart Charity Scholarship. “This is just the beginning; trust me when I tell you there are a lot more kids who want to go to college who don’t have the money to make it happen.”
The fund was established in part with the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and Knowledge Is Power Program (KIPP) to help administer the capital to future and current college students. Recently, Hart awarded three students at Xavier University and six students from his hometown of Philadelphia a portion of the scholarship. Overall, 18 scholars will benefit from the awards.
In a statement, UNCF’s CEO and President Michael L. Lomax shared why the need to send these students to HBCUs is an integral part of the fund’s mission.
“Research shows that HBCUs matter and that HBCU students are having a positive college experience, but they also have an unmet financial need,” Lomax said. “Together, Kevin and KIPP have made an investment that will have a significant impact. We can’t thank them enough for their support.”
