Terry Crews Addresses Jokes About Sexual Harassment In PSA

Terry Crews has remained steadfast in calling for justice for victims of sexual misconduct. To drive the message home, the actor conducted a PSA on Samantha Bee’s Full Frontal program to get viewers and spectators to take the issue of sexual assault seriously.

“Lots of things are funny that aren’t rape jokes,” Crews said. “…You don’t need to do jokes about assault to be funny.” Crews and Bee then ran down a laundry list of scenarios or jokes that one could say in place of controversial remarks on sexual abuse.

In June, Crews appeared before a Senate Judiciary Committee to share his recollection of the night WME affiliate Adam Venit allegedly groped him. The incident occurred at a party in 2016, a moment that Crews had to re-assess several times in order to grasp the gravity of what just occurred. “The assault lasted only minutes, but what he was effectively telling me while he held my genitals in his hand was that he held the power,” he said. “That he was in control.”

Due to a statute of limitations, Crews’ case against Venit was denied by a Los Angeles court. Despite this defeat, the 50-year-old entertainer continued to spread optimism in the midst of the #MeToo movement and former Hollywood executive Harvey Weinstein’s sexual misconduct case: “I understand and empathize with those who have remained silent. But Harvey Weinstein is not the only perpetrator. Hollywood is not the only business where this happens, and to the casualties of this behavior — you are not alone.”
