Halle Berry and Lena Waithe To Co-Executive Produce BET's 'Boomerang' Reboot
"We hope people will come to the show with an open mind and ready to embrace the new world we’ve created!"
In Apr. 2018, it was announced that BET would be rebooting the classic romantic comedy film Boomerang into a series. While some were skeptical about the upcoming production, they will be happy to know that some major talent in Hollywood is lending their eyes and skills to the series. Halle Berry and Lena Waithe have reportedly signed on to co-executive produce the forthcoming show for BET and Paramount Television.
The new series will be produced into a 10-episode series, with each episode running for 30 minutes. “I’m thrilled to team up with Lena on this project as she is without a doubt a leading voice of her generation and a trail blazer in her own right,” Berry said in a statement Monday (Sept. 24). “I’m truly excited to be a part of bringing this iconic and beloved film to the small screen.”
Waithe added: "This is less of a reboot and more of a continuation of the original story. There’s no point in trying to remake a classic. It can’t be done. So we want to create something fresh that speaks to a new generation. We hope people will come to the show with an open mind and ready to embrace the new world we’ve created!"
While nothing will beat the original, it is nice to see that the veteran cast is being honored and incorporated into the reboot. As you may already know, Halle Berry starred in the 1992 film as Angela. She played the love interest of the hot-shot, ladies' man, Marcus, played expertly by Eddie Murphy.
In addition to executive producing the series, Waite will serve as co-write for the series opener alongside Ben Cory Jones. It will reportedly focus on the modern-day children of Berry and Murphy's fictional characters, as well as the role of Jacqueline, whom was previously played by Robin Givens.
Boomerang 2.0 doesn't have a release date at this time. We'll see if Berry and Waithe hold it down for the culture when the time comes.
