While Jennifer Hudson provides her coaching skills on The Voice, the Chicago native is using her vocal prowess to help usher along another influential story. During Hudson’s interview on Ellen (Sept. 26), the “Spotlight” singer dished on her excitement behind Aretha Franklin’s upcoming biopic.

“It’s always been my dream to play Aretha and it’s actually happening,” she said. “It blows my mind. I’ve always looked up to Aretha and to portray her, I can’t even speak about it. That’s a huge task.” The film is in production and will take some time to perfect since Franklin’s career spans decades.

Hudson, who sang at Franklin’s funeral in late August, was commissioned to be attached to the film by the “Respect” singer given her powerhouse voice. “She stops any and every show she’s in,” Clive Davis, who announced the news in January 2018, said. “Her voice is truly incredible.”

On Aug. 16, the Queen of Soul died after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Her legacy was remembered across the globe, but specifically in her hometown of Detroit, Michigan. During the funeral service, which was held at Greater Grace Temple, politicians and performers eulogized Franklin in word and song.
