Reporter Told That Her Hair Was “N***ery Lookin'” After Wearing It Natural

An Afro-Latina reporter was told via voicemail that she had “n***ery-looking” hair after wearing her natural curls during a televised report.

Corallys Ortiz, a meteorologist and reporter in Tennessee, said on Facebook that this is just the second time in 10 months she let her natural hair shine through on television. She was sent an uncalled-for voicemail at the station for her curly tresses.

“To the weather girl tonight, please don’t wear your hair like that anymore,” a woman named “Donna” reportedly said via- phone call. “It just doesn’t look good at all.  Change it back to something more normal.  Not something that’s all– n***ery lookin’.”

“A viewer who goes by Donna felt that my hair wasn’t up to ‘her standards,’” wrote Ortiz via Facebook. “The following video just reflects back to everything I just said about criticism and dealing with what is considered ‘cultural or racial ignorance.’ Racism for short. It is very clear you can hear what she says and it’s something I don’t condone.”

The reporter has been receiving mounds of support from viewers. Elsewhere in her post, she writes that she hopes that people like Donna will one day realize the nation she once knew has changed to reflect the times and the different people living in it who make it great.
