A New York Man Faces Jail Time For Choking His Girlfriend For Breaking Up With Him
The 22-year-old Queens man faces up to 10 years in prison.
A 22-year-old Queens man is now facing federal charges for choking his then-girlfriend aboard a cruise ship after she tried to break up with him.
According to The New York Daily News, Carlos Batista grew irate, dragging his girlfriend through the hallway of the cruise ship and covered her mouth to muffle her screams. Batista at another point suffocated her, which caused her body to go limp.
After Batista hauled her into the cabin, other passengers who heard the commotion were able to get in and rescue the woman. They saw his elbow was over her neck.
“Thankfully, others on the ship came to her aid. Now Batista is back on New York soil and must answer for his alleged criminal actions,” Manhattan U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman said.
The cruise ship was reportedly headed to the Bahamas. However, court papers didn't identify the cruise ship operator. Batista was held in the ship's brig until it returned to New York.
Batista has been charged with one count of assault of a spouse, intimate partner or dating partner by strangulation or suffocation.
