Amy Schumer Joins In Protest Spirit, Turns Down Super Bowl Ads

When Maroon 5 was announced as the Super Bowl LIII’s half time performer for February 2019, the decision was met with split concerns. On one side, the masses were angry that a Super Bowl being held in Atlanta seemingly neglected to select an artist from the area, or even an artist of color (Note: Maroon 5’s drummer is soul singer and New Orleans native, PJ Morton). Even Bruno Mars called for rappers to be offered  the major spot.

However, the other side put two-and-two together that the major acts who might have been asked to perform possibly turned down the offer in order to be on the right side of history. JAY-Z already reportedly turned down an offer last year in support of Colin Kaepernick. This year, it was made public that Rihanna declined the gig for the same reason.

Now, comedienne Amy Schumer has shown her support as an ally to the cause by opting out of Super Bowl ads. Although she wishes Maroon 5 would pull out from performing the way Rihanna did, she decided to do her part as a white woman of privilege to hurt the mega sports entity’s pockets.

“I personally told my reps I wouldn’t do a Super Bowl commercial this year,” she said in an Instagram post Friday (Oct. 19). “I know it must sound like a privilege a** sacrifice but it’s all I got. Hitting the nfl with the advertisers is the only way to really hurt them.”

Friday thought. I wonder why more white players aren’t kneeling. Once you witness the truly deep inequality and endless racism people of color face in our country, not to mention the police brutality and murders. Why not kneel next to your brothers? Otherwise how are you not complicit? I think it would be cool if @maroon5 backed out of super bowl like @badgalriri Did. I personally told my reps I wouldn’t do a Super Bowl commercial this year. I know it must sound like a privilege ass sacrifice but it’s all i got. Hitting the nfl with the advertisers is the only way to really hurt them. I know opposing the nfl is like opposing the nra. Very tough, but don’t you want to be proud of how you’re living? Stand up for your brothers and sisters of color. And the hottest thing a guy can do is get down on one knee. Not to propose but to reject the treatment of his teammates by this country. Anyone who says its disrespectful to our military please read up on the fact that a lot of veterans are proud of what @kaepernick7 is doing and fully support him. What are your thoughts?

Way to support the cause, Amy.
