Ava DuVernay To Direct A Prince Documentary For Netflix

Ava DuVernay has been tapped by the Prince estate to direct a documentary about the late singer for streaming behemoth Netflix. The Academy-Award nominated filmmaker along with her close-knit crew of editors and producers have spent that last few months exploring the Purple One’s treasure trove of unreleased material and studio in his Paisley Park home.

The Queen Sugar director spoke to Deadline about her newest project, his genius and the approach she’s taking toward the documentary.

“He was like no other. He shattered every preconceived notion, smashed every boundary, shared everything in his heart through his music. The only way I know how to make this film is with love. And with great care. I’m honored to do so and grateful for the opportunity entrusted to me by the estate.”

Prior to his April 2nd death, Prince contacted the Selma director about working together, Deadline reports.

The as yet untitled documentary isn’t the only project DuVernay is working on. For the entire summer, she’s relocated to New York where she’s working with an all-star cast on the four-part series about the Central Park 5. The Wrinkle In Time director is also working on a screen adaption of Jack Kirby’s The New Gods.

Well done, Ms. DuVernay
