New Music Alert: Ella Mai Collaborates With Chris Brown On “Whatchamacallit”

Entertainment

While Ella Mai gears up for the release of her first full-length eponymous album, the singer-songwriter drops yet another single for fans titled “Whatchamacallit.” The melody, which features fellow R&B peer Chris Brown, is the fifth track that listeners will hear on Mai’s upcoming debut self-titled project.

For three minutes, the British songstress and Virginia native belt out their confession of wanting to leave their lovers for each other but question if it’s considered infidelity over an electro-driven beat. The track’s theme and male-female collabo are very reminiscent of Destiny’s Child’s 1999 song with R&B trio Next’s “If You Leave” off the Houston group’s sophomore album The Writings on the Wall. It’s also a nod to 3LW’s 2002 sultry song “Crazy,” but to a lesser extent.

Mai is enthusiastic about Brown’s discography, listing him as a musical influence. “Vocally, he’s amazing,” she said via press release. “If he didn’t come out the way he did and make the music that he did, I think I would be a completely different artist. He’s influenced an entire generation.”

When the DJ Mustard protege began to soar up the pop charts with her single “Boo’d Up” this past summer, many admirers took to Twitter to express their wish for Mai to release a remix to the song with C Breezy based on the track’s vibe.

Aside from securing RIAA certification for her singles “Boo’d Up” and “Trip” and holding the record for longest-running No. 1 by a female artist on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, the 23-year-old singer has many blessings coming her way next week.

The American Music Awards nominated her for Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist and Favorite Soul/R&B Song (“Boo’d Up”). She’s also scheduled to perform on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon when her album drops on Friday (Oct. 12).
