Jermaine Dupri Thinks The Super Bowl Boycott Is Ineffective

Atlanta producer Jermaine Dupri believes that conversations about important topics are much more effective than boycotts. In this case, he’s talking about the recent wave of celebrities boycotting the upcoming Super Bowl LIII, which is slated to take place in his hometown.

The So So Def founder says that instead, high-profile figures should be using their platforms to have these discussions, rather than to boycott the event altogether.

“Boycotts and marches don’t seem like they work to me, I’m sorry,” he said while talking to TMZ Sports on Monday (Oct. 29). “I think they should send a message while they’re onstage, take advantage of your platform.”

“The more people speak on it, the more they talk about it, then the more people feel like it’s something they have to address,” he continued. “I feel like people ignore boycotts… It seems really interesting to me because we’re in a industry where you see so many people do things like boycott something, one year, and then the next year they’re buddy, buddy with the thing that they boycotted,”

Entertainment figures like Rihanna and Amy Schumer are staying away from the high-profile game in support of Colin Kaepernick and the crusade to silently protest systematic racism and police brutality. The Bajan musician reportedly turned down the offer to perform as the Halftime show performer, and Schumer says she will not participate in any ads next year.

“I know it must sound like a privilege a** sacrifice but it’s all I got,” she wrote on Twitter of her decision. “Hitting the nfl with the advertisers is the only way to really hurt them.”
