Simone Biles Calls Out USA Gymnastics President For Anti-Nike Tweet

Simone Biles is not only the greatest gymnast of all-time (debate us, we dare you), but she also knows how to use her platform and voice for good.

She competed during night two of the USA Gymnastics national championships with a teal leotard to (hand)stand in solidarity with sexual assault victims in the wake of former Dr. Larry Nassar’s sentencing, and now, she’s calling out the recently-announced president of the sport’s organization for an anti-Colin Kaepernick tweet.

The interim President and CEO Mary Bono tweeted out a photo last month of her blacking out the swoosh on her Nike shoes during a golf outing in response to the company’s ‘Just Do It’ 30th anniversary campaign featuring Colin Kaepernick.

“Playing in a charity golf tournament raising money for our Special Forces operators and their families,” she wrote in the now-deleted tweet. “Unfortunately had these shoes in my bag. Luckily I had a marker in my bag too….”

“Mouth drop,” wrote the 21-year-old sports phenom in response to the tweet. “Don’t worry, it’s not like we needed a smarter usa gymnastics president or any sponsors or anything.” Biles is sponsored by Nike.

Bono apologized for her comments after Biles’ response went viral.

“I regret the post and respect everyone’s views & fundamental right to express them,” she wrote. “This doesn’t reflect how I will approach my position @USAGym I will do everything I can to help build, w/ the community, an open, safe & positive environment…I look forward to telling my gymnastics story, my vision for the future of the sport and why I wanted the job.”

According to a press release from USA Gymnastics, Bono was appointed for her known ability as an “outstanding communicator who can coalesce people with differing views and perspectives.”
