2 Injured, Gunman Killed In Alabama Mall Shooting
The incident, taking place just before Black Friday adds more concern to gun control laws across the nation.
A modern tradition of shopping just before Black Friday was marred with chaos when a gunman opened fire in an Alabama mall, injuring a 12-year-old girl.
CNN reports the shooting took place at the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover after a dispute between an 18-year-old and 21-year-old outside of a Footaction. The gunman was the unnamed 21-year-old, who was killed by police when he tried to get away. During the fight between the men, a 12-year-old girl was shot.
Hoover police Capt. Gregg Rector said they weren't aware how the fight started but "do not believe at this point the 18-year-old was armed." The teen is currently in serious condition at a local hospital while the young girl is being treated with non-threatening injuries.
Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said the officer who shot the suspected gunman was placed on administrative while they investigate the incident.
"We were fortunate that Hoover officer was there where he needed to be, and we believe at this point that maybe he prevented further injuries," Rector said.
Hoover's largest enclosed mall was closed after the incident and will remain closed on Black Friday. The owner of the shopping center, Brookfield Properties, released a statement about the tragedy.
“We are working closely with the Hoover Police Department and are grateful for their swift action to contain the situation,” spokeswoman Lindsay Kahn said.“While there is no current danger to our community, the shopping center will remain closed for tonight.”
