Forever My Lady: Al B. Sure Pays Tribute To Kim Porter

Singer-songwriter Al B. Sure! took to Instagram to commemorate the influence and memory of Kim Porter. The pair were romantically linked in the early '90s and produced a son, Star actor Quincy Brown. Through their relationship, Al B. Sure!, born Albert Brown, was inspired by Porter to pen one of Jodeci's best-selling singles, "Forever My Lady."

In tribute to Porter, Brown published a black-and-white photo of the pair with a heartbreak emoji and a caption reflecting on Jodeci's aforementioned song. During an episode of TV One's Unsung, Brown said he was encouraged to write the melody when he learned Porter was pregnant with Quincy.

"I remember they were working on the song and they couldn't come up with the lyrics and Al looked at me and he was like, 'So you're having my baby,' and I was like, 'Ohhhh!'" Porter recalled. "Forever My Lady" went on to top the US R&B Chart and remains one of Jodeci's most recognizable records.

Tyler Perry Strikes A Chord With Moving Speech At 2019 BET Awards

Tyler Perry struck a chord at the 2019 BET Awards on Sunday (June 23). After accepting the Ultimate Icon Award, the producer, director, and writer delivered an inspirational message to other black creatives looking to change the mold and break into the film industry.

Taraji P. Henson, who has appeared in several Perry films, presented him with the award. "In a time when my counterparts were making way more money than I was, Tyler Perry was the first to pay me my exact worth," Henson said.

In his powerful speech, Perry recalled growing up in an abusive household. To make his mother laugh, he would often imitate women she played cards with. He stated that those experiences allowed him to create his first 10 movies. "That moment reminded me of my mother, bringing out of her pain with laughter, helping her cross," he said. He added that he created those film in hopes of letting his mother know "she's worthy, to let black women know you are worthy, you are special, you are powerful, you are amazing. All of that that was about helping her cross."

Later in his speech, Perry also spoke about building his Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta and giving many young actors like Taraji and Viola Davis their big break. "When I built my studio, I built it in a neighborhood that is one of the poorest black neighborhoods in Atlanta so that young black kids could see that a black man did that, and they can do it too," he continued. "I was trying to help somebody cross. The studio was once a Confederate Army base, which meant that there was Confederate soldiers on that base, plotting and planning on how to keep 3.9 million Negroes enslaved. Now that land is owned by one Negro."

He added: "It’s all about trying to help somebody cross. While everybody else is fighting for a seat at the table, talking about ‘#OscarsSoWhite, #OscarsSoWhite,’ I said, ‘Y’all go ahead and do that. While you’re fighting for a seat at the table, I’ll be down in Atlanta building my own.’ Because what I know for sure is that if I could just build this table, God will prepare it for me in the presence of my enemies."

Tyler Perry's speech was met with a standing ovation. Watch his powerful moment in the video above.

YG Handcuffed And Cited For Reckless Driving In Tense Traffic Stop

YG was reportedly handcuffed and cited for reckless driving on Sunday (June 23), TMZ reports. Footage from the scene shows a seemingly tense interaction between police and bystanders.

YG and friends were reportedly en route to the 1 OAK nightclub where the rapper was set to make an appearance when he was pulled over by police. Law enforcement claimed YG was speeding and weaving in and out of lanes on the Sunset Boulevard. Video shows YG speaking with two officers.

Although the "Go Loko" artist appeared to be calm in the video, police said the rapper had become "upset and uncooperative and used profanities toward the deputies," which prompted them to handcuff his hands behind his back.

Witnesses soon became upset with the ways in which the police responded to the situation. Footage shows one cop exchanging words with a young man across the street from him. It's unclear what the man was saying to the officer, but the cop can be heard telling him to "shut up."

YG was reportedly ordered to take a sobriety test and a field breathalyzer, which determined that he was not under the influence. He was later cited for reckless driving and released.
