Faith Evans' prowess within the music industry has been canonized thanks to the Soul Train Awards. During the annual presentation on BET on Sunday (Nov. 25), the "Come Over" singer received the Lady of Soul Award for her accomplished legacy.
Preceded by well-wishes from artists like Missy Elliott, Al B. Sure!, Karen Clark Sheard, and her husband Stevie J, the New Jersey native reminisced on her upbringing in Newark and finding her voice in the church. "I never knew I would be a recording artist," Evans said. "I just knew I wanted to make a living with my gift of music." The honor arrives 23 years after Evans released her self-titled debut album.
Within the package, Stevie J offered words of reflection, noting that Evans was always destined for success once she stepped into the limelight. "She shook the whole industry up because everybody knew her as a songwriter, as a background singer and when she actually took the forefront, it was over," Stevie J said.
To accompany her acceptance speech, Evans performed a batch of her hit singles. "You Used To Love Me" and "Soon As I Get Home" were a couple of the standouts, but one of the greatest moments occurred when Carl Thomas joined the R&B songstress for their "Can't Believe" duet.
