A Female-Driven 'Fast And Furious' Is In The Works
The Fast and Furious series is far from over, and apparently it's going to get a huge twist. Vin Diesel hopped on Instagram on Wednesday (Jan. 23), where he revealed that a female-driven Fast and Furious spin-off was being developed for Universal Pictures.
To bring the new film to life, Captain Marvel's Nicole Perlman and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, and Sierra Burgess Is A Loser's Lindsey Beer have all signed on as screenwriters.
Michelle Rodriguez is expected to reprise her role as Letty. It's unclear if the film will also feature other recurring, female characters such as Nathalie Emmanuel (who played Ramsey in 2017's The Fast of the Furious), Jordana Brewster (Mia Toretto), or Elsa Pataky (Elsa).
Th female centric film is reportedly one of three spin-offs in development for the franchise. Rodriguez previously voiced her interest in women having a more dominant and inclusive role in the films. "First and foremost, bringing some more women on the good team, not just bringing an amazing actress to play the bad guy, and having more female camaraderie, having women do things independently outside of what the boys are doing — that is truly the voice of female independence," Rodriguez told Entertainment Weekly. "Now, having girls run around and do a bunch of really cool stuff, that’s great, it’s wonderful, but we never talk to each other. It’s very rare that they even look at each other. I’ve been making movies with Jordana [Brewster], who plays the sister of Dom Toretto, for 16 years and I can count on one hand how many lines I’ve had to her. I think that’s pathetic and it’s lack of creativity. Guys don’t know what girls talk about. They think that girls just sit around talking about guys and it’s a sad truth of men being the dominant writers in Hollywood."
The female-based film doesn't have a production schedule or release date at this time. The Fast and Furious 9 will release is slated to release in Apr. 2020.
