New York's Highline Ballroom To Close Its Doors In February

Several promoters have spread the news about the over 10-year-old venue.

UPDATE 1/11/19 1:37PM ET:

Steven Bensusan, the owner of the Highline Ballroom, has sent a statement to VIBE about the closing of Highline Ballroom. The venue will reopen in the near future

“Unfortunately after 12 years our landlord has decided not to renew Highline Ballroom’s lease. For over a year we were led to believe that a renewal was imminent, however it is now clear that the landlord has other plans for the building. This is obviously a growing trend within the New York real estate market impacting various entertainment venues and businesses. We plan on reopening Highline Ballroom at a new location in the Chelsea/Meatpacking District and are currently looking at options. We hope to be able to announce our plans soon.
In the meantime our final show date and programming will be announced shortly.
We have been very fortunate to present some of music's biggest names in a small club atmosphere; Lou Reed, Paul McCartney, The Killers, Amy Winehouse, The Black Keys, Artic Monkeys, Adele, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, The Roots and so many more have performed on the stage at Highline Ballroom. It is a shame that we have to close our doors, though we are grateful for the support we have received from fans and artists over the years in making the original Highline Ballroom location a truly unique experience.”

New York's Highline Ballroom is reportedly closing its door after over 10 years in the business.

According to Brooklyn Vegan, several promoters have shared the news on social media, including Bedlam/Club Cumming owner Daniel Nardicio, who posted the news on Facebook. Responding to another user, Nardicio stated that February 8 would be the venue's closing date.

Another niche event space for early hip-hop and R&B shows from the A$AP Mob, Tory Lanez, Rihanna and legends like Stevie Wonder, the Highline Ballroom brought about an enjoyable balance for music lovers with its old-school style and charm.

Owned by Blue Note Entertainment Group, the closing of the venue comes just after the company shut the doors to BB Kings, another staple for legacy jazz, hip-hop, rock and R&B artists.

The venue hasn't commented on the news and at the time of this report, didn't respond to our inquiry. A number on its social pages for Jason Kaciupski was also out of service. Their website features a number of performances and events happening after February 8 like a Wifisfuneral show on the 15th, an OkayAfrica event in March and Lil Tracy show in April.

But no need to fret. Webster Hall, another favorite venue in New York is expected to make a comeback after a year of renovations.

Report: Ariana Grande Got Paid Twice As Much As Beyoncé For Coachella

As fans continue to marvel at Beyonce's historical Coachella performance in the Netflix documentary, Homecoming, a new report about the pay discrepancy amongst the festival's headliners is also grabbing people's attention. According to Variety, Ariana Grande got paid double of what Bey earned for her performance.

Grande reportedly made $8 million from the festival, while Beyoncé only took home an estimated $3 to $4 million.

This certainly seems a little odd to fans due to a handful of reasons. For one, Beyoncé is a much more seasoned artist. Additionally, her headlining show, also known as BeyChella, was a historical moment that drew millions of viewers.

Grande also made history this year as the youngest artist to ever headline the three-day event, but the U.S. pay gap may have more to do with the huge difference between their paychecks. Black women make approximately 65 cents to every dollar earned by their white male counterparts. By contrast, white women earn 83 cents to every dollar earned by white men, according to the Pew Research Center.

"It was always in my head that this was going to be something that helped raise money for environmental issues, but I didn’t really know the facts. I looked into it and was blown away."

Dicky says that he was working on the song for about two-and-a-half years before it was released. It's quintessential Lil Dicky, but it's also informative.

Remy Ma Under Police Investigation Over Irving Plaza Attack

Remy Ma is reportedly under investigation in New York over her involvement in an alleged attack that took place backstage at Irving Plaza, TMZ reports.

Remy Ma was scheduled to perform at the event alongside Fat Joe. Things apparently took a wrong turn in the backstage area, however. Love & Hip Hop star Brittney Taylor claims Remy Ma punched her in the right eye Tuesday night (April 16) during the Pretty Lou Benefit Concert at the concert venue. She reportedly went to the hospital for treatment before filing a police report.

According to law enforcement, Brittney alleges and Rey "exchanged words" in the greenroom relating to an attack on Remy's stepdaughter, Dejanae, that occurred weeks ago. The State of the Culture host allegedly accused Taylor of knowing about the attack. That's when Remy allegedly threw the first punch.

Taylor shared a photo of her black eye on Instagram after the incident. "So, here am I on my way to a very important meeting and it’s hard to even focus because of what occurred last night," she said. " I didn’t wanna bring it to social media because It's pretty embarrassing and not a good look tbh. I tried my best to cover it up with makeup and move on but that still didn’t work. My Question is @remyma why did you really do this?"

Taylor and Rem have a history of beef on the VH1 reality show. Remy is currently on parole following a 2007 attempted murder charge. No arrests have been made, and no new charges have been filed.
