Valerie Castile, the mother of Philando Castile, who was shot and killed by a police officer during a routine traffic stop, sat down with CNN for her first interview following her son's fatal shooting by a police officer.
“I’m outraged,” she said.
You can hear the hurt in Ms. Castile’s voice as she spoke about the tragedy. “I never once in my life would have thought that my son would be killed by the persons meant to protect and serve him,” she said.
She hasn’t watched the Facebook video of his killing that went viral, and she doesn’t plan on doing so, because she wants to remember her son as the man that she knows him to be. He visited her the day before he was murdered, and she recalls the conversation that took place between her daughter and Philando, regarding the permits they had that allowed them to carry a firearm.
“They were saying to be cautious and my daughter said you know what, I really don’t even wanna carry my gun because I’m afraid that they’ll shoot me first, and then ask questions later.”
Ms. Castille's motherly instincts kicked in when she began to receive several phone calls and heard her daughter screaming in the house. She immediately knew something was going on.
Upon arriving to the scene, she was prevented from entering the area of the accident, when all she wanted to do was ensure her son didn’t die alone. She has yet to get in contact with Philando's girlfriend, who was in the vehicle with her son during the incident, but she applauds her for the way she handled the situation.
“I just want to say that I appreciate Diamond streaming that video live, because we never would know exactly what happened had she not put that out there like that. And then for him to blatantly shoot into that vehicle with that child in there, and that female, and I know for a fact my son would never jeopardize his fiancée and the child by doing anything to provoke this officer to think that his life is in danger.”
“No he was not an officer, he’s just a man” his uncle Clarence Castile chimed in. Ms. Castile defines Philando to be a good person. "He's a laid back, quiet individual that worked hard everyday."
