Erica Garner, the 27-year-old daughter of Eric Garner, is on life support after suffering a heart attack Saturday (Dec. 23), according to the New York Daily News. The mother of two is currently in the intensive care unit at a Brooklyn hospital, and unable to breathe on her own, her family confirmed to the outlet.
Erica has been a vocal advocate against police brutality since her father was killed after being placed in a chokehold by an NYPD officer in the summer of 2014.
Her latest pregnancy reportedly put a strain on her heart, causing her to go into cardiac arrest a few months ago. She apparently suffered from an enlarged heart, a condition that she was unaware of prior to the pregnancy. Erica welcomed a son in August, and is already mother to an 8-year-old daughter.
“She’s not doing well and we’re praying,” Erica’s mother, Esaw Snipes-Garner, told the Daily News. The heart attack was brought on by an asthma attack, the report states.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, Erica’s sister, Emerald Snipes Garner revealed that she had “another heart attack last night.”
“She's in critical condition,” Emerald wrote of her sister. “I just left the hospital and it's not looking good...I pray she makes it she has two little ones to live for.”
Additional updates posted on Erica’s Twitter account revealed that she’s in a coma, while the family continues to ask for prayers.
