Childish Gambino's funk-earthy sounds helped shaped his critically acclaimed album Awaken My Love!, earning plenty of new fans.
One of them happens to be Taraji P. Henson, who shared her appreciation for the entertainer at Billboard's Women In Music Awards. "I listen to his music and he's so reminiscent to all genres," she said Thursday (Nov. 30). Awaken, released at the tail end of 2016, stretched into this year thanks to the success of the platinum single, "Redbone." Gambino's project brought forth his ability to jump from genre to genre, similar to a certain purple one.
"Funk, Jazz, R&B, Hip Hop. He sounds like Prince sometimes and later, he'll sound like Parliament," she said. "He's just everything to me, I love that kid."
Henson presented the Icon Award to Mary J. Blige, a powerful woman she's happy to call a friend. "She sings from her heart," she said. "You know that every word that she's singing -- that drips from her mouth -- she's experienced. The fact that she's bold enough to share her truth and get so many people through broken hearts, or uplift so many people...that's a gift."
