Ryan Coogler may have broken records with his billion-dollar, box office smash Black Panther, but the acclaimed director is all about spreading the wealth. In his recent two-hour talk at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday afternoon (May 10), Coogler turned the spotlight on the female characters in the Marvel film and their importance to the overall story. He also showed interest in creating a female-oriented spinoff.

If the opportunity ever presented itself, Coogler would most definitely be interested in created a spinoff for the female voices of Black Panther. “Oh man,” Coogler said when posed the question about a female spinoff. "That would be amazing if the opportunity came up. They did it in the comic-book version."

"We have these actresses who could easily carry their own movie,” he said, mentioning Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, and Angela Bassett. “Some of them have before. We were so fortunate. I would watch a movie with them!”

When asked by moderator and critic, Elvis Mitchell is the female characters were as important as the male voices in the film, Coogler didn't even hesitate. "I think you could argue they are more important," he said. "There’s a whole section of the film where T’Challa is out of the movie and you’re just following the women... That’s one of my favorite parts of the movie when I watched it, and I didn’t expect that."

Black Panther crushed at the box office during its opening weekend in Feb. 2018. It went on to gross over $1.3 billion worldwide., making it the highest-grossing film of 2018 (before Infinity War beat it out). It is reportedly the third-highest grossing film in the United States, and the highest-grossing film by a black director in history.

We'll be looking out for the spinoff.
