Saweetie’s quick rise to fame happened in front of our very eyes—literally.

Before the world discovered the Bay Area rap star, VIBE was tuned into her Instagram raps and uncanny ability to transform her freestyles into viral hits. Back in 2017, she conducted her very first interview with us—before Warner Music came calling—and we watched her Youtube pageviews blow past the double-digit millions in a matter of weeks.

Following the release of her debut EP High Maintenance, Saweetie stopped by our New York City office for a field trip to the Big Apple’s trendy Lower East Side neighborhood. Over shots of Korean soju and bar snacks at Space Mabi, the college grad-turned-music-sensation talked about her latest release, biracial background, personal connection to her fans and more.

“It was such a relief to put out my EP because I was living with the songs for so long,” Saweetie tells VIBE. “I [just] wanted the world to listen to what I was [making].”
