The borough of Brooklyn continues to churn out hot new rappers. Next in line appears to be Bobby Shmurda, a 20-year-old MC who’s become an overnight Vine star thanks to his unorthodox Shmoney Dance, an infectious, playful two-step that he shows off in the music video for his catchy track, “Hot Nigga.”
After Meek Mill brought Shmurda out for a performance at Miami’s King of Diamonds, the video for “Hot Nigga” quickly shot up to more than one million views on Youtube and has drawn comparisons to the drill scene in the Chi.
“He reminds me of Chicago-ness,” DJ Drama told VIBE Wednesday at the Reebok Classic Breakout tournament. The bubbling music video features the pre-legal spitter with his GS9 crew pantomiming imaginary guns and dropping threatening bars.
“It’s kinda wild watching New York artists who have aspects of other rappers from other places,” Drama continues. “It just shows you how the game comes full circle.”
As for the Shmoney Dance that’s been sweeping the ’Net, DJ Drama approves.
“The dance is hot… It’s been a minute since New York had a dance,” says Drama, citing Webstar and Young B’s Chicken Noodle Soup as NY’s previous dance craze. “I watched a couple of the videos—I like what he’s doing. I like his personality and his name, Shmurda.”
Drama didn’t mention any upcoming collaborations with the budding Brooklynite but our guess is that it could happen for the right amount of shmoney. —Christopher Harris
