Ella Mai’s glowing career is moving at lightning speed. Seemingly racing herself on the charts, the London-born songstress broke numerous records in the weeks leading up to her debut album release. Now, less than two weeks since its release, Mai’s debut self-titled album has officially gone gold.
Speaking to VIBE Thursday (Oct. 25), Mai shares how her music trumps any accolade.”Music is therapeutic for us [musicians],” Mai says. “For me, the accolades and the recognition are a bonus. At the end of the day, I make music cause I love to make music and to be able to touch people, even if it’s just one person is a bonus. To be able to have everything else on top of that is like a super-bonus, I hardly can explain it.”
Announced by the “Trip” singer on Wednesday (Oct. 24), the RIAA officially crowned Ella Mai a gold-certified album just 12 days after its arrival. Selling an equivalent of 500,000 records, the love-drunk, Mustard-produced R&B record debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, marking the largest first-week debut for a female artist in over four years.
Comprised of hit singles “Trip” and “Boo’d Up,” the numbers Mai is hitting are seemingly inevitable, to say the least. Most recently, Mai’s breakthrough track “Boo’d Up” went quadruple platinum– a sure drive to album sales. Additionally, just hours after receiving the gold certification for Ella Mai, the 23-year old singer also learned that her single “Trip” had gone platinum as well.
