K Camp may have come into the hip-hop game by smashing the club scene, but he has so much in store for fans. As a child in Atlanta, the 25-year-old was exposed to music from the ’60s and ’70s through a host of relatives who played in bands around the country.
“My musical background goes back to my aunties and uncle,” K Camp tells VIBE. “I got an uncle that plays the piano out in Vegas. They call him Arty, The Party. My grandma was in band, my auntie, all the the older generation in my family is musical inclined.”
He credits hearing music from the likes of Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye as his earliest musical influences. Though, he wasn’t aware at the time that he was actually soaking up game as he sat around the house as a kid while his family played the classics.
“Music was just a hobby,” Camp says about the way he fell into rap. After he stopped playing basketball in high school, the teenager needed something else to occupy his time — and music was the most natural fit. Camp was already making songs with his friends for fun, but through their encouragement, he took his craft seriously.
For those still not convinced of his musical prowess, they’ll just have to wait for his debut album. He still has the dancefloor shakers, however, there’s also socially conscious lyrics, songs from the heart and musical growth set to shock the critics.
“I’ve been planning this for years,” the rappers forthcoming project.
