Filmmaker Issa Rae is making strides in race relations for black girls.
According to Deadline, HBO is moving forward and ordering the pilot for a comedy project titled Insecure, starring Rae and comedian Larry Wilmore. Wilmore is also the show’s co-creator and writer, and recently launched his Nightly gig on Comedy Central.
Insecure will focus on uneasy racial experiences that today’s African-American women face, including some of the topics Rae has covered in her web series The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl. The e-series has racked up about 20 million views and close to 200,000 hits on YouTube.
In addition to The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl and Insecure, Rae has a collection of essays, also dubbed The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, set for a Feb.10 release by Simon & Schuster Publishing.
The air date for HBO’s Insecure is still TBD.
