Like other women who have donned menswear on the cover of L’Uomo Vogue, including Beyonce and Madonna, Nicki Minaj is a boss in her own right. Discussing the ever-present balancing act of being a ruling woman in the predominantly male space of hip-hop, the rapstress’ fierce photoshoot is complimented with a discussion of eventual marriage and motherhood.
Recalling being overwhelmed with her schedule after shutting down with on The Carters’ “On The Run” tour in Paris, Nicki expressed a sentiment that many women share: she is inspired by Beyonce. After hanging with Bey, Jay and Blue Ivy, Young Money’s first lady has a newfound hope that she can do it all.
“Seeing Beyoncé with her daughter and husband was so tender, and it showed me that it is possible to be an animal on stage and a caring mother at the same time,” she said.
And while Mrs. Carter inspires her future aspirations of a family, her current goals are more along the lines of Mr. Carter.
“I want to build my empire,” she said. “In my field, I have always seen men do it – from Diddy to Dr. Dre to Jay-Z. Now it’s a woman’s turn.”
Nicki also revealed that witnessing her mother’s abuse has been a motivating factor in assuring her own independence. And that after overtaking the industry, she plans to take a break and focus on caring for her future children.
“I gave myself a time limit to reach my professional goals”, she said. “I don’t want to work my whole life without ever experiencing the joys of a family.’
