Every year, MTV crowns a host that presumably embodies the spirit of one’s middle finger: zero F-bombs to give. With this year’s master of ceremonies being the controversy magnet, Miley Cyrus, the 2015 Video Music Awards—rocking L.A.’s Microsoft Theater this Sunday—is sure to break the Internet IRL.
“They said, ‘This is your party,’” the 22-year-old twerkaholic recently told The New York Times of her hosting debut. “I didn’t want this V.M.A.s to be like they’ve been in the past.”
While we commend Miley’s innovative intentions, VIBE took a scroll down memory lane, revisiting past VMAs and their hosts’ crazy antics. From The Wayans Brothers to Chelsea Handler, see how many wild characters you can remember below.

The Wayans Brothers
Year They Hosted The VMAs: 2000
Shawn and Marlon Wayans brought the LMFAOs to their hosting gig, even performing a parody of Macy Gray’s “I Try” and (for Marlon) showing some cheek.
Arsenio Hall
Years He Hosted The VMAs: 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991
Arsenio became a VMA Hall-of-Famer when he hosted the MTV awards show four times, back to back to back to back. His outfits are also the stuff that #TBT is made of.
Jamie Foxx
Year He Hosted The VMAs: 2001
Chelsea Handler
Year She Hosted The VMAs: 2010
The queen of roasting had a hot tub soiree with the Jersey Shore cast and clowned on Justin Bieber. Quotable of the night: “My plan was to stay sober the entire show, but, in an interesting twist, I am as high as a kite. That’s the last time I do a prayer circle with Snoop Dogg.”
Chris Rock
Years He Hosted The VMAs: 1997, 2003
Chris Rock was so nice, he did it twice. For the 20th birthday of MTV, the standup OG took silly shots at the network’s roster of shows from Say What? Karaoke? (remember that?!) to Diddy’s Making The Band. Flip back to 1997 and a choir sang Kid Rock’s hit “Bawitdaba” as Rock’s entrance theme. Revisit both openers (with haste!) below.
Jimmy Fallon:
Year He Hosted The VMAs: 2002
Before dominating late night and making A-listers lipsync their fave tunes for a living, Jimmy Fallon was a Saturday Night Live star-turned-VMA-host who spoofed your fave jams like Eminem’s “Without Me,” The White Stripes “Fell In Love With A Girl” and Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated.” While there were some, er, complications for Fallon’s rendition of Nelly’s “Hot In Herre,” his intro was still lit.
Kevin Hart
Year He Hosted The VMAs: 2012
The fun-sized comic packed his blazer with zingers for everyone including Twilight starlet, Kristen Stewart, Drake and Chris Brown’s bottle-bopping beef and Frank Ocean’s coming out.
Diddy
Year He Hosted The VMAs: 2005
Bad Boy was in the building when the rap mogul formerly known as Puff took on hosting duties for the 2005 VMAs. With a fury of pyro and aerial yoga dancers, Diddy’s extravagant opening monologue made for some rump- and Harlem-shaking fun.
