When is nail art ever a topic of conversation in the context of activism? Enter Dominican nail artist, Ami Vega, who’s recently been sparking political consciousness with her hand-painted wizardry, one radical fingernail at a time.
Vega’s designs range from Black Lives Matter-related images and LGBT-inspired illustrations to feminist symbolism, and tells The Huffington Post they are “a reflection of what’s going on in society,” something the late, great Nina Simone echoed on the role of an artist.
The past few years have seen Vega’s clients, more and more, request drawings that mirror their personal standpoints, an act she believes allows for “real conversations face-to-face, to make an impact and to push your thoughts and views so you can get them out there and get them seen.”
